Neill Blomkamp Releases RAKKA – a 22-Minute Short Film from Oats Studios

RAKKA - Oats Studios Volume One

“Cut its fucking head off!”

Definitely one of the coolest lines Sigourney Weaver has ever uttered.

Angry Blomkamp is my favorite Blomkamp. And this one has it all. Insurgent forces, surreal gore, apocalyptic imagery… and Sigourney.

Now I’ll forever wonder what Alien 5 could have been.

Oats Studios Launches Online

Director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) started making a major push online with his new venture ‘Oats Studios’ a few weeks ago.

“I’ve been building it for about two years. I have met pretty talented people that we’ve slowly assembled, so it’s been happening for a long time. At the end of making Chappie, I wanted to try to figure out a different method for making films and expressing myself. I felt that if I could sell smaller pieces directly to the audience, the sale of those small experimental pieces would keep this machine alive so that it became an ecosystem that was self-sufficient.” [1]

Rakka: Oats Studio Volume 1

And now they’ve finally released ‘Rakka: Oats Studio Volume 1’.

‘RAKKA is the story of broken humanity following the invasion of a technologically superior alien species. Bleak harrowing and unrelenting, the humans we meet must find enough courage to go on fighting.’

I’ll be following Oats closely. I hope the first Volume attracts enough eyeballs to put out a follow-up. The disappointing critical and box-office reaction to Chappie was ‘unbelievably painful‘ to Blomkamp and the rest of us were bummed that his Alien 5 project never got off the ground.

He started teasing his new endeavour back in November, 2016 when they released two short 10 & 13 second clips parodying Trump’s presidency.
